Promoting equal opportunities for females staff and students of Ethiopian TVET colleges

Staff members from the three polytechnic colleges Dire Dawe, Bahir Dar and Tegbareid gathered in January for a workshop in Addis Abeba on gender sensitivity in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The purpose of this workshop was to enhance common understanding of gender concepts and terminology, to discuss various challenges and opportunities for equal education, training and career perspectives in the TVET sector and to be able to recognize and raise awareness on gender based violence. In addition, the participants learned about different  approaches and instruments to promote gender equality for staff and students, and how to engage with local private sector and civil society organization to achieve common objectives. Apart from being exposed to various general concepts, approaches and international practices, the participants appreciated the interactive exercises and opportunity to share experiences with colleagues from the other colleges.

Based on the mutual learning during the first days of the workshop and on the context and needs within their own college, the participants identified the priorities and possible objectives of a gender equality plan that they will continue elaborating in the coming months.

The workshop was part of the Erasmus Plus project Strengthening TVET in Ethiopia through Smoother Pathways to Career (STEP). This project funded by the European Commission is implemented by CINOP in collaboration with Cordaid, AMBERO and the three colleges, and aims to enhance job creation and improve inclusive education in relevant sectors.
