International study on applied research in vocational education and training

There is an increasing trend of applied research in vocational education and training (VET). This is not surprising, as applied research often provides mutual benefits for all partners engaged. Applied research, on the one hand, meets the growing need of SMEs for support in innovation efforts; and, on the other hand, promotes the innovation and learning processes of students and teachers in VET through hands-on research. In the Netherlands, applied research in VET takes place through practorates and public-private partnerships. Also in other countries, applied research is done in VET adopting various approaches within different policy and financial frameworks.

Commissioned by the European Training Foundation (ETF), researchers from CINOP and ECBO mapped how different countries conduct applied research in VET. We conducted an international mapping study in four countries: Spain, Turkey, Canada and the Netherlands. In each country we described one specific case study. This revealed interesting insights about the different design choices made to shape research in VET.

The report ‘International mapping study on good practices of applied research in vocational education and training’ was written by Meghan Rens, Epke Vogel, Daniëlla van Uden and Willem Kleinendorst (CINOP-ecbo) and funded by the European Union.
