TVET in Indonesia

The impact of TVET in Indonesia for the maritime and logistics industry is largely determined by the quality of teachers, relevant curricula and  attractive teaching and learning methods. There is a strong need to develop teacher training, as these are the people that have to transfer the knowledge to the students. Subject matter knowledge and didactical skills of teachers should be on par to provide education/training of high quality.

Next to the availability of sufficient teachers with the right knowledge, attitude and skills, there should be a curriculum in place which is matching the demands from the industry in order to provide graduates which are job-ready. This means that the competencies, learning objectives and work processes have to be included. Furthermore, there should be a proper certification and accreditation process in place promoting trust in TVET delivery that relates to agreed standards.

Cooperating for change

The parties STC International, the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in Surabaya and CINOP work together to strengthen the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the maritime and logistics sector in Indonesia. The results of the project will be the improved performance of teachers and modernised  the curricula achieved through the cooperation  between Dutch & Indonesian institutes.

Didactical skills and Competency Based Education and Training (CBET)

In the framework of the project, a didactical skills training and introduction to competency based education and training (CBET) has been organised at the Shipbuilding institute of polytechnic Surabaya. The main focus of the training was the understanding and application of CBET in the daily curriculum and engaging with industry. Also attention was paid to interactive teaching methods and 21th century skills.

Several other trainings will follow to continue professionalization of the teachers. In the coming years, all cooperating partners will put in their time and energy in reaching the project goals.

The didactical training helps me lots to understand the concept of Competence Based on Education and Training (CBET) and how to implement it.
