Basic skills for educational institutions

As an educational institution, you are responsible for teaching basic skills such as language, math and citizenship. This is essential for preparing students for the job market. CINOP works with educational institutions to make students self-reliant, so that they can enter society and their professional future well prepared.

Our approach

CINOP works with educational institutions to strengthen basic skills. Together with teachers, team leaders and policy advisors, we determine where the need lies and what first steps are needed. No two approaches are alike, and we tailor our offerings to the specific needs of each school.

What does this look like in practice?

A customized course may include:

  • Baseline in view
A baseline measurement that provides insight into the development of basic skills within the institution.
  • Lesson visits and observations
Through lesson visits, we gain insight into the learning environment and student needs.
  • Project Group
Together with teachers, we determine aspirations and develop interventions.
  • Interventions
From training sessions to curriculum modifications or further field research.
  • Monitoring and implementation
Following the interventions, we monitor the effects and ensure the implementation of the improvements.

Training and consulting for educational institutions

CINOP offers various training courses for educational institutions, including:

  • Language Assessor (Dutch)
  • Reading power: cross-curricular work with reading skills
  • Critical thinking

Publications on language and math

Our solutions are based on current research conducted by ECBO. Among other things, we have conducted several studies on students’ language and math levels and how they affect educational quality.

Be realistic in what effects you expect in the short term and also realize what you are driving at as an administrator. After all: if you want higher pass rates or exam grades, you might want to use exam training. But don’t expect that to actually lead to sustainable language development. Perhaps a more important conclusion was: give it time to link language to the profession! This is not something you arrange 1-2-3. It requires a change in behavior from all involved. And that takes time….

By mapping the background of mbo teachers of basic skills and citizenship, starting points can be found to help these teachers to further develop themselves and to professionalize where necessary. The research provides tools for shaping future policy so that it matches the experiences and needs of MBO teachers as closely as possible. In this way, this research contributes to supporting the quality of education in the generic subjects at the mbo.

Teachers lack resources to properly assess students’ level and report finding it difficult and time-consuming to apply differentiation in the classroom and support students at their own level. Now, ICT solutions are often used to allow students to practice appropriate to their level. However, teachers experience that this often does not lead to sufficient progress.

The study reveals several factors related to language delay in children and adolescents. The relevant factors are important to include in preventive interventions. The report shows that prevention should focus on factors such as oral and written language skills of the child, reading attitude of the child, quality of education and parent involvement.

The Math Train is a program intended for parents who want to know how to help their children with math. And perhaps want to learn how to handle numbers a little better themselves. The research was made possible by the Expertise Point Basic Skills.

This manual contains an overview of 15 formative testing techniques for subject arithmetic. These techniques give math teachers insight into the learning of MBO students.

What is known about the causes of math weakness in students within the mbo? What remedial strategies have proven effective in this regard?

Concerns about the decline in performance in general core skills and the desire for continuous learning lines are the reason for paying more attention to language and math in Dutch education. In ‘Rekenniveaus op het mbo: Dutch youngsters along the international yardstick’ we chart the level of arithmetic in senior secondary vocational education.
